Anonymous asked: How do you feel about women who rant strongly against slut shaming only to turn around and claim they have slut pride? This isn't an insult or anything negative directed towards you, I was just read your response to the other Anon and got curious.
I’m not taking it as an insult considering I never have and never will call myself a slut (even in a positive manner), in real life or on this blog.
While I don’t particularly feel comfortable joining in on “slut pride”, I understand the necessity for it. They are reclaiming the word. They’re trying to turn something negative into something positive. (If you’ve ever read the book “Cunt”, it’s exactly about this concept… reclaiming a word used against us and turning it into something positive.)
I REALLY hope I am not being offensive here, but a woman named Marcie Sillman has talked about the n-word and black American culture. Am I going to use that word? Not in a million years. But many black Americans have reclaimed that word and have attributed positive associations with and it’s even become a term of empowerment. I believe the same concept is seen in “slut pride”. I feel like it’s basically saying, “Hey, this word shouldn’t exist in the first place, but since it’s here let’s make the most of it. Let’s turn the word ‘slut’ into something good.”
Does anyone else want to chime in on this? Like I said, I’m not super involved in this outlook, so it would be nice to get the opinion of someone who is.
